200px-Flag_of_GuyanaThe Guyana Program is temporarily on hold while Guyana implements the requirements of the Hague Convention.

Eligibility of Applicants

  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 65
  • There must be no more than 50 years and no less than 17 years between child and adopter
  • Single applicants are eligible to adopt in Guyana
  • Married couples or common law partnerships or a combination of both for a minimum of 5 years

Children in the program :The majority of children who are referred for international adoption are eligible due to economic distress.  Children are cared for in licensed orphanages as overseen by Guyana’s Child Care and Protection Agency.

Wait times to adopt: From the time the agency receives the homestudy and provincial approval, it takes approximately 2 years to complete the adoption in Guyana.

Travel: Families are required to make 2 trips to Guyana, the first to meet the proposed child and the second to attend court to finalize the adoption. The first trip is about 2 weeks in duration and the second trip is about 3 weeks. Following finalization of the adoption in court in Guyana, the adoptive parents must comply with Citizenship and Immigration Canada requirements to bring their child to Canada.

Costs: Program costs do not include travel and accommodation overseas. If you meet the above eligibility please contact the agency for a copy of our Guyana Program Package.
