Children in the Program: Children range in age from about 2 to 8 years old at the time of adoption. They are referred for intercountry adoption generally due to economic distress or abandonment. The children live in government operated orphanages.
Wait times to adopt: From the time of registration in the program, it takes between 1 to 2 years to complete an adoption from Nigeria.
Eligibility requirements: Most states in Nigeria require applicants to be Nigerian nationals to adopt a child from their state and also require a 3 month residency period in that state immediately prior to adoption court for finalization.
The Lagos State program does not require a 3 month residency period and accepts non-Nigerian applicants. It takes between 1 to 2 years to complete an adoption from Lagos state after receiving provincial approval.
Relative Adoption: The agency provides services to applicants who have or intend to adopt a relative child from Nigeria. All adoptions are subject to the approval of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allowing the child to enter and reside in Canada. Immigration timelines are not included in this estimate.
Costs: Program costs do not include travel and accommodation overseas. Foreign program costs and legal fees vary between service providers in different states. Please see Summary Chart and contact our office to receive the Schedule of Fees and Services.
